4 Simple Ways To Keep Your Dog From Destroying Your Fence

[Estimated read time: 3 minutes]

Dogs will be dogs. But, your furry friend could be wreaking havoc on your fence as they try and dig their way out.

Follow these five steps and to make your fence and pooch happy, without the need of fence repair.

Know your dog’s habits well

Dogs have the energy of a toddler so keeping an eye on them is a good idea, especially those with younger puppies who aren’t trained enough.

Some breeds are also more likely to cause problems due to them being bred to be diggers. Terriers and Beagles are the main standouts in this category, so keep a closer eye on them.

Voice commands such as a firm “No” can stop digging and over time they will learn to stay away from your valued fence.

As the saying goes, silence is golden. But, when you have a dog, silence is very suspicious, so pay attention to where they are to avoid fence repair.

Use landscaping to create physical barriers

Landscaping keeps your yard looking its best – it’s also an effective way to stop your dog from digging their way into trouble.

Bushes alongside the fence deter the curious pooches from approaching them. They also build a spring-ready perimeter that will keep your yard looking spectacular.

Wires are a handy alternative when you want to keep Rover away from the petunias because of their durability. The metal stands up to the most vigorous of diggers and ensures your fence looks pristine.

Bushes and plants are a much more attractive option to wires, but both are effective at keeping your wandering pooch from digging.

Use slats to block their curiosity

Covering up and blocking the gaps in between the fence with a lattice weave is beneficial, providing you with some privacy. This also has the added benefit of blocking all of the visual stimulations your dog might see.

Solid fences, such as wooden privacy fences, also do the trick. They’ll be less likely to dig to try and protect you from that friendly grandma passing by your home.

Place rocks around the fence

Placing rocks around the fence might deter them from trying to dig. Once they dig and realize that a solid piece of rock is blocking them, they will lose interest.

Rocks also add a refreshing touch to your home while filling up any gaps that might have appeared.

Follow these tips and you will be able to enjoy the beauty of a fence with your furry friend for years to come with minimal fence repair.
