Best Ways To Care For Your Yard In Summer

austin yard in summer

During spring, your lawn has just recovered from winter and is ready to turn back to its healthy green color. As families gather to have barbecues, parties, and family gatherings, it’s essential to have a yard that is presentable and have a healthy glow.

However, Austin is known for its harsh, humid summers which can cause harm to a yard that is not well prepared. How can a harsh summer affect your lawn, and are there ways to ensure that it’s not damaged?

How does summer affect lawns?

Most people are unaware of how seasonal changes affect grass and the best way to keep it healthy all throughout the year.

Most grass planted in Texas is at its healthiest in weather around the 70s. At this temperature the grass is able to properly absorb the water and doesn’t face overexposure to the sun. As the temperature begins to rise in warmer climates such as Austin, growth begins to slow, the colors aren’t as vibrant, and some grass varieties get brown and dormant until fall.

This is especially true during dry spells where no rain occurs and the sun is beaming down strongly on your yard. In Austin, this can occur frequently with weather in the upper 90s and strong humidity in the air being common for several months.

How to properly water your lawn during dry spells

Lawn needs about an inch of water each week to remain healthy. In order to encourage the growth of roots, it’s necessary to water your lawn less frequently while also watering deeply to encourage new growth.

Water your lawn early in the morning before the sun is high or late at night. This prevents the heat of the day from making the water evaporating faster and encouraging the growth of fungus.

The general rule is to be consistent with your watering to ensure that the grass is kept healthy. However, if you are not consistent and suddenly start watering several times a week it will be hard to have a healthy lawn.

Caring for your fence is essential too

Your fence serves several purposes. It adds a visual appeal to your home, establishes your property boundaries, and also adds a layer of security for your home. All fencing becomes worn after several years of direct sunlight and with the added humidity there might be a potential for rotting unless it’s taken care of.

There is also the added damage that can occur with animals or children who attempt to climb the fence. Texas also sees its fair share of high winds, hail, and rain that can cause damage.

If you have wooden fences, make sure that the posts aren’t exposed to water sprinklers which could cause water damage. Areas where water can form pools or where piles of falling leaves can collect can also cause humidity which will lead to rotting.

To avoid this, make sure to keep shrubbery and plants trimmed while preventing them from growing alongside a fence. Cover the posts or apply a layer of water sealers if necessary if the weather calls for extensive rain throughout the week.
