Extending The Life of Your Fence

Sealants and oil finishes can aid in extending the life of your fence.

As we make our way further into fall we’ll start to see bigger changes in the weather. While it can be nice to see the color of the leaves change the drastic temperature fluctuations in the Austin, Texas area can impact the overall lifespan of your fence. Left untreated, you could start to see damage to untreated wood fences. Sealants and oil finishes can aid in extending the life of your fence.

Why seal?

Sealing your fence is a great way to help prolong the life of the wood and keep your fence looking great. It’s also a good way to add color without having to use paint. Sealing adds water resistance and can have the added benefit of UV protection adding years of the life of your fence. Sealing can also help prevent splitting and cracking from water damage during the wet cold months.

Popular Types of Sealants

Clear and Tinted Sealers
– These are typically cheaper per gallon and offer a great way to protect your fence from rain and water. Great for all weather and can typically be applied with a simple brush but can take a couple of days to dry. You can speed up the process by using a paint roller or by using a sprayer. Most clear and tinted sealers can easily last anywhere from 2 to 4 years, extending the overall life of your fence.

Stain and Sealant Combo
– Stain sealants are great for preserving your fence while adding some color and bringing out the natural look of the wood. You can typically get these in various stain colors to compliment the look of your home. The two in one nature allows for quick applications with staining and sealing only taking about a day or less. You can expect to see 6 to 15+ year lifespans for most stain and sealant combos. The application is usually simple and easy with a standard brush, roller, or sprayer.

Oil Finishes
– Oil finishes are great for enhancing the natural wood grain on your fence. Perfect for those who want a natural look but still want the added benefits of UV protection and resistance to mold and mildew. Oil finishes can have a shorter overall lifespan so be sure to check your brand and labels for specifics. Most oil finishes can be applied with a brush. If you want a quick and easy way to get an even finish, try using a tear-resistant stain pad  for wood that has more texture.

Eco-Friendly
– If you’re looking for something easier on the environment while still extending the life of your fence. go with a water-based sealer. These will usually have less volatile organic compounds (VOCs) making it much easier on the environment. As an added bonus, water-based sealers are generally easier to clean up. Some simple soap and water will usually do the trick.

Most smaller to medium sized fences can be sealed in a day or less, especially with a helping hand or two. If you take a day or two out of your busy fall to show your fence some care you can help extend the life of your fence.
