Best Types of Fences for Pets

There are many benefits of fences for pets. Fences not only help pets understand the boundaries of their territory, but they can also keep them safe from predators. Fences may provide a designated space for playing and relaxing, and they place a barrier between the home and street so animals are safe from traffic. With a fence, pets are also less likely to engage in fighting or overwhelming contact with strangers. Additionally, fences help prevent unwanted pregnancies, as fenced pets are unable to roam and find a mate.

Best Pet Fence Types

You need a fence that protects your pets from the world outside and does not cause them to become a danger to themselves or others. Look for one that is durable, stable and safe for people, too.

If you’re building a fence that will affect your neighbors, make sure to give them a heads up. Let them know what type and size of fence you are installing.

The fence you choose depends on the type of pet you have. Dog fences range from wooden and chain-link fences to electric and wireless fences. Goat fences must be sturdy wood or metal with good braces on either side of the gate. The best chicken fences are typically made of wire, with buried metal material around the chicken run to prevent predators from digging into the coop.

How to Keep Your Pets From Escaping Through a Fence

You want to ensure you have a fence that your pet cannot escape from. First, create an environment in which your pet feels comfortable. There should be no attractive foods, animals, or people on the other side the fence. After installing the fence, monitor any attempts to escape from the area, and determine whether you need to take extra measures.

Maintenance of Your Fence

Regularly walk the perimeter of your fence to look for openings. Immediately repair any posts or wire that your pet has damaged or loosened. Ascertain whether animals or people have tried to destroy the fence. There are many reasons intruders may want to breach a fence.

If there have been attempts to weaken the fence, address the issue. You can consider a wide variety of options, from creating a “liquid fence” by sprinkling predator urine on the ground to posting a sign that asks people not to damage the fence. Over time, you’ll know how effective your actions are, and you’ll be able to maintain a sturdy fence that properly protects your pets.
